college is hard
I miss college all the time. You spend all your time hanging out with your friends, you can get Grey Goose wells for $2 and everything you need or want is within walking distance. Would I go back and do it again? No.
The worst part of college is school. Classes are hard, and you might be late to your friend’s cowboy party because you have French until 8 p.m.
But it’s about to be the spring semester and while you are relaxing now, that horrible anxiety of assignments, grades and wanting your professor’s approval will return.
My one tip?
Stop freaking out about your grades. It is easier said than done, but it is a good goal to work toward.
I was anal about grades from Kindergarten to 12th grade. I HAD to get into a good college, I thought. I had to go to NYU or Yale or something. How else would I be successful as an adult or a respected journalist? I cried when I got my first (but not last!) B in 4th grade math.
I went to state school (go Hoosiers), got mediocre grades, dropped classes regularly and had to take statistics three times. Guess what? I’m fine. Sometimes I still dream that I forgot to attend a math class I enrolled in and my grade is low and I didn’t know there was a final, but generally I am OK.
So if you suck at math or got a shitty grade on your final article for a journalism class, it’s fine. What is important is that you learned something.
A grade can’t exactly prove whether or not you actually learned anything. The classes where I got As are the classes where I basically knew the material already. The classes that helped me grow the most are the classes where I got Bs and Cs.
And if all your friends are straight-A students like mine were, just know they probably don’t look down on your because you get Bs.
Also no one is looking at your grades once your graduate. But don’t lose your scholarship please. call me if you need to cry. don’t call me if you need help with stats.
tech boys and me
Who is obsessed with who? It’s hard to tell. This year I’ve pretty much only been on dates with tech boys. I was in San Francisco for several months, which explains some of it, but what about in Bloomington or New York?
I just counted and the number is six. I mean it’s not a million, but six feels like a lot? I’ve sworn off dating film/media people in recent months because I’m over the self-obsessed, “I’m so smart” energy they give off. Also, sick of being judged for my movie/music/TV taste. So, I’m not seeking out tech people, but they do have perks. So I’m listing my pros and cons about software engineers… for science.
pros
they make more money than journalists
they will definitely pay for your dinner
they can fix your electronics
their apartments have good Wi-Fi you can use
they value time off and are down to take days off to do whatever
often go to therapy
cons
super annoying
they hate their jobs and complain about it constantly
obsessed with crypto, investing and NFTs. shut up!
Asian fetish. (obviously not every tech boy don’t come for me)
Just because there are more pros than cons does not mean they are a good match. Because they are super annoying. Am I currently seeing a tech boy?
